The 1AD-FTV is the 2.0-litre engine in Toyota's AD diesel family, the aluminium-block D-4D units Toyota developed mainly for its European-market cars. It went into the Corolla Verso, the later Verso, the Corolla sedan, Auris, Avensis and, near the end of its run, the RAV4. Toyota updated it over the years, moving from 1,700 bar solenoid injectors to a 2,000 bar piezo system with a lower compression ratio, so not every 1AD is identical inside.

In South Africa it is mostly found in Corollas and Versos that did big distances, often as family or business cars. It pulls well from low revs and is economical on the open road.

The honest wear points are well known. Early units can suffer from head gasket trouble and oil consumption, so a used engine should be checked for coolant loss, pressurised coolant and blue smoke. Injectors, the EGR valve and the intake can carbon up, and the DPF on later cars needs regular highway driving. Turbo condition and oil supply should be confirmed at fitment.
