The story of this transmission

The DT12 is Detroit's own automated manual transmission, introduced in 2012 so that Daimler Truck North America could offer a complete in-house driveline in trucks such as the Freightliner Cascadia. It is a 12-speed box that shifts itself under computer control, with a clutch rather than a torque converter. This unit carries the model code DT12-1650-OH1 and came out of a 2018 truck.

Owners of Freightliner long-haul tractors, including the growing number of US-built Cascadias working in Southern Africa, like the DT12 because it keeps the engine in its best range and takes driver shifting habits out of the picture, which helps fuel and clutch life on long cross-border runs.

DT12 variants differ in ratio spread and torque rating, so the full model code on the housing tag matters more than the family name. When you fit a used unit, have the transmission control software checked and calibrated to the truck, inspect the clutch actuator and air supply, and use the correct grade of gearbox oil. Send us the tag code from your old transmission and your VIN and we will confirm the match before freight is booked.

FAQs

Will any DT12 fit my truck?

Not necessarily. DT12 models differ in ratios and torque rating, so we match the full code on your transmission tag, in this case DT12-1650-OH1, together with your VIN.

Does the transmission need programming?

Plan for the transmission control software to be checked and set up for your truck by a workshop with Detroit diagnostic equipment.

What warranty applies?

Warranty on truck transmissions is confirmed in writing with your quote and requires fitment by an RMI-registered workshop with new oil and a sound clutch.

Can you deliver outside South Africa?

Yes, to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini and Malawi, as well as anywhere in South Africa.
