The story of this engine

The 1AD-FTV is the 2.0-litre member of Toyota's AD diesel family, built for its European-focused cars rather than its bakkies. It is a chain-driven, twin-cam four-cylinder with a variable geometry turbo, intercooler and common rail injection, rated at 93 kW. Early engines made 300 Nm on solenoid injectors, while the refreshed version moved to piezo injectors, a lower compression ratio and 310 Nm.

The first-generation Auris got the 1AD from 2007, and the second-generation car kept it from 2013 to 2016. The same engine went into the Corolla, Avensis, Verso and RAV4, so it is familiar to Toyota specialists across South Africa.

The AD engines have a known history of head gasket failures and oil consumption, often linked to carbon build-up from the EGR system clogging the intake and pistons. Before fitting, check for coolant loss, white smoke and pressure in the cooling system, and clean or replace the EGR valve and intake. Injector leak-off tests and turbo shaft play are also worth checking.
