The story of this engine

The 2ZZ-GE is the performance engine of Toyota's ZZ family, developed with Yamaha's involvement and fitted to the sportiest Corollas, Celicas and even the Lotus Elise and Exige. It has a bigger bore and shorter stroke than the 1ZZ, an 11.5:1 compression ratio and VVTL-i, which switches to a high-lift cam profile at high revs. In the Celica GT-S and Corolla T-Sport it made 141 kW.

South Africa has a special link with this engine. The Corolla Sportivo hatch with the 2ZZ-GE and a six-speed manual was built exclusively here, and the local RunX RSi used the same engine. Those cars still have a loyal following among enthusiasts.

The 2ZZ asks for care. Its oil pump is a known weak point and can be damaged by over-revving, usually from a missed downshift, and even brief oil starvation can finish the engine. Early engines also had lift bolt failures, which Toyota fixed with a revised bolt in late 2002. Check oil pressure, listen for lift engagement around 6,000 rpm and inspect the bottom end where possible. Workshops respect the 2ZZ because, set up properly, it is a sharp, reliable engine that rewards correct oil and sensible driving.

Will this fit my Corolla?

The 2ZZ-GE was fitted to the Corolla Sportivo and RunX RSi, not the standard 1.8 Corolla, which used the 1ZZ-FE. Send your VIN and engine stamp photo on WhatsApp to confirm.

What is included?

What warranty comes with a 2ZZ-GE?

Because this is a high-performance engine, it is sold with a start-up warranty only. Have it fitted by an RMI-registered workshop with new oil, filters and coolant, and prime the oil system before first start.

Why do 2ZZ-GE oil pumps fail?
