The story of this engine

Toyota's 1NZ-FE is the 1.5-litre four-cylinder that sat under the bonnet of Japanese-market Corollas for well over a decade. It arrived with the E120 generation in 2000, carried on through the E140 Axio and Fielder, and also powered the Vitz, Yaris, Vios and Corolla Spacio. It is an aluminium, chain-driven twin-cam with VVT-i on the intake camshaft, built for economy rather than speed.

In South Africa most of these engines come out of imported Corollas, Fielders and RunX X models, and the cars they end up in tend to be daily runners that cover serious distance: commuter cars, small delivery cars and family hatchbacks. Owners like the fact that there is no cam belt to replace and that service parts are easy to find.

Before fitting a used unit, listen for timing chain rattle on a cold start, check the VVT-i oil control valve and its filter screen, and look at the coil packs and injector seals. Rocker cover gasket leaks are normal on older units and cheap to fix.
