The A14NEL is the lower-output version of GM's 1.4 turbo petrol engine, known internally as the LUH. It belongs to the Family 0 range, a compact engine family that GM turbocharged so a 1.4 could do the job of an older 1.6 or 1.8 while using less fuel.

It makes 88 kW with a flat 200 N·m from just 1,850 rpm, and a short overboost to 220 N·m. That broad, low torque is the point of the engine: it feels stronger in traffic than its size suggests. Opel used it in the Corsa D and other models, and its higher-output sister, the A14NET, appeared in the Astra and others.

On any used A14NEL, check the turbo for shaft play and oil leaks, inspect the PCV valve in the cam cover, which is a known failure point on this family, and look for coolant leaks from the plastic pipes and thermostat housing. Listen for timing-chain rattle on a cold start, and ask about the donor's oil change history.
