The story of this engine

Opel's 1.8 twin-cam petrol is the largest member of the Family 1 engine line, and over the years it appeared in several versions. In the Astra and Zafira you will usually find the Z18XE, used up to about 2006, or the later Z18XER, which added variable timing on both camshafts and produced 103 kW. Both share the same 1,796 cc capacity and 80.5 x 88.2 mm bore and stroke, but sensors, intake and engine management differ, so the code matters.

This listing is offered as an Astra and Zafira 1.8, and we confirm which version it is against your VIN before it leaves. In South Africa the 1.8 is a common choice in older Astras and family Zafiras that have covered big distances.

Things to check on any used 1.8: the cambelt and water pump, which should be renewed at fitment; oil leaks from the cam cover and the oil cooler housing; and, on the Z18XER, the cam phaser solenoids, which can give rattles and fault codes when oil changes have been neglected.

Mechanics are comfortable with this block. It is iron, it is simple to strip, and most service parts are shared with the 1.6 versions, so keeping one going is not expensive.
