The story of this engine

In South Africa the hatchback version of the E120 Corolla was sold as the Run-X, and its entry model used the 4ZZ-FE. This is the 1.4-litre member of Toyota's ZZ family: an aluminium four-cylinder of 1,398 cc producing about 72 kW and 130 N.m, with the same basic design as the 1.6 and 1.8 ZZ engines but a shorter stroke.

The Run-X 1.4 was a popular first car and family hatch, and many still serve as daily runners and student cars. Because the same engine also went into the Corolla sedan and the Auris, good used units turn up regularly, but the Run-X-specific intake and wiring are worth confirming.

When choosing a used 4ZZ-FE, pay attention to oil use. The ZZ family, mainly the 1ZZ, has a reputation for burning oil because of its piston ring design, so check the plugs and look for blue smoke. Also listen for timing chain noise at start-up, look for cam cover leaks and check coolant. A compression test is the best single check.
