Used Engines and Transmissions Delivered to Windhoek

Windhoek is a long way from our Potchefstroom headquarters, well over 1,500 km by road, but Namibian workshops and fleet owners still find it worthwhile to source engines and transmissions from South Africa. The trip crosses the Kalahari and the Orange River before heading up through the south of Namibia to the capital.

West through the Northern Cape

The load travels west from Potchefstroom along the N14 through Vryburg and Kuruman to Upington. From Upington the N10 runs to the Nakop border post, which faces Ariamsvlei on the Namibian side. After clearing, the truck continues past Karasburg to join the B1, then heads north through Keetmanshoop, Mariental and Rehoboth into Windhoek. This is freight territory, so units go with a carrier that runs regular cross-border loads, and the trip usually takes several working days.

Customs inside SACU

Namibia is part of the Southern African Customs Union with South Africa, so the unit moves within one customs union, but it still has to be declared at the border with proper documents. Clearance and any import VAT or charges in Namibia are paid by the buyer, normally through a clearing agent. We provide the commercial invoice and the engine number paperwork, and we coordinate with your agent so everything lines up when the truck arrives at Ariamsvlei.

Rand pricing

Quotes and payments are in South African rand. Because the Namibian dollar is linked to the rand at one to one, it is straightforward to work out the cost in local terms.

The Namibian fleet

Long gravel roads, heat and dust mean Namibia, like Botswana, leans heavily on Toyota. Generally, the replacement units in demand are for:

  • Hilux bakkies and Land Cruisers used on farms, in tourism and by contractors
  • 4×4 rental and safari vehicles that cover huge distances
  • Trucks hauling goods on the B1 and the Trans-Kalahari corridor
  • Sedans and minibus taxis in Windhoek and Katutura

Frequently asked questions

How long does an engine take to reach Windhoek?

Usually several working days after dispatch, depending on the freight schedule and border clearance at Nakop and Ariamsvlei.

Do I need a clearing agent for a delivery to Namibia?

Usually yes. Even within SACU the unit must be declared, and clearance and any import VAT are the buyer's responsibility. We supply the commercial invoice and engine number paperwork.

Can I pay in Namibian dollars?

Prices are quoted and paid in South African rand. The Namibian dollar is linked to the rand at par, so the amount is easy to work out.
