The story of this engine

The 3126 was a turning point for Caterpillar: its first electronically controlled mid-range diesel. It is a 7.2-litre turbocharged inline six with a 110 mm bore and 127 mm stroke, and it replaced the mechanical 3116 before being followed by the C7. The B and E versions that came later kept the same hardware and changed the electronics.

This is a 2001 3126E listed at 210hp, which sits towards the lower end of a family that was rated anywhere from 170 to 420hp. The 3126 found work in dump trucks, delivery and fire trucks, buses, motorhomes, cranes and boats, mostly in North America, and many have since come to Africa in imported vehicles.

On a used 3126, look at oil pressure, blow-by and turbo play, and ask how the engine starts and idles, since uneven running can point to injector or electronic faults. Check for coolant leaks and listen for knocking under load.

The core engine is shared, but the electronics differ between versions. Send both serial and arrangement numbers and tell us whether you are reusing your ECM so we can advise.

What is included?

The engine as shown in the listing photos. ECM, harness, gearbox and cooling package are excluded unless confirmed in writing.

What warranty applies?

Warranty on truck engines is confirmed in writing with your quote. Fitment must be by an RMI-registered workshop or qualified diesel mechanic, with new oil, filters and coolant.
