The story of this engine

The BNV is the updated 1.4 TDI three-cylinder that arrived with the facelifted Polo in 2005. It keeps the same 1 422 cc, six-valve Pumpe-Duse layout as the earlier BAY, but Volkswagen raised output to 59 kW while keeping 195 Nm at 2 200 rpm, and some versions were offered with a diesel particulate filter.

In practice that means a frugal small diesel with enough low-down pull for highway cruising and town work. It suits owners who drive long distances in a compact car and want to keep fuel bills down, and like-for-like replacements are the easiest way to keep these Polos on the road.

On a used BNV, check the timing belt and tensioner records first. The unit injectors are driven off the camshaft, so cam and follower wear is a known issue if the wrong oil was used; ask about service history and use the correct VW specification after fitting. Inspect the injector wiring loom and seals, check the turbo for shaft play, and confirm whether your car has a particulate filter, which should be tested for blockage before the engine goes in. Check engine mounts too, as a three-cylinder will shake more on worn mounts.

Can I replace my BAY with a BNV?

They share the same basic design, but the BNV has different management and output. Send your VIN and current engine code so we can tell you whether the swap is practical.

What is included?

The long block as shown in the photos. Gearbox, clutch, ECU, harness, fluids, filters and the timing kit are excluded.

What warranty applies?

3 months on internal engine components and 7 days on the turbo, provided an RMI-registered workshop fits it with new oil, filters and coolant.

Does the BNV have a particulate filter?
