The story of this engine

The B4164T is Volvo's name for the 1.6-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder that Ford developed and shared with Volvo while the two companies were still connected. It combines a compact 1,596 cc block with a turbocharger and direct injection, letting Volvo offer T3 and T4-badged models with the pace of a much larger engine. Volvo added a number after the code for each iteration, and the outputs vary noticeably between them.

In South Africa the engine is best known in the V40 hatchback launched in 2012 and in the S60 and V60, cars that sold well to buyers moving down from bigger luxury sedans. They are now reaching the age where engine faults appear. The common ones are coolant loss and overheating, which can crack the head or damage the block, plus carbon build-up on intake valves, a typical trait of direct-injection petrol engines, and turbo wear from short-trip use.

A used B4164T is a straightforward repair when the rest of the car is in good shape. Pressure-test the cooling system, replace the thermostat and coolant hoses where needed, and fit fresh oil of the correct specification. Send your VIN and the engine code. Volvo used B4164T, B4164T2 and B4164T3 with different outputs, so we confirm the right one before quoting.

What is included?

What warranty do I get?

3 months on internal engine components and 7 days on the turbo, provided an RMI-registered workshop fits it with new oil, filters and coolant.

Why did my original 1.6 turbo fail?

Overheating after coolant loss is a frequent cause on this engine. Find and fix the leak, pressure-test the system and check the radiator and thermostat before fitting the replacement.
