The CNC series is Audi's third-generation EA888 2.0 TFSI for longitudinal cars, introduced with the facelifted A4 B8, A5 and Q5. The CNCD version makes 165 kW and 350 Nm. Compared with earlier 2.0 TFSI engines it adds port injection alongside direct injection, an integrated exhaust manifold in the head, Audi valvelift and cam adjusters on both camshafts, all driven by a chain.

In South Africa the 2.0 TFSI Q5 and A4 were strong sellers, valued for quick, smooth performance with quattro traction. They are now old enough that engine replacement is a real option for owners who want to keep a well-specified car rather than trade it in.

The third-generation EA888 is a big improvement on the first, but it has its own checks. Low oil pressure from blocked strainers or a failing oil pump has been reported. Pistons can crack from detonation, so good fuel and sensible tuning matter. The timing chain still stretches with age, and the water pump and thermostat housing, plus the N488 valve area, are common coolant leak points. The turbo wastegate actuator sometimes needs adjustment.

Workshops like the CNC engines because a matching code keeps the original ECU and wiring, and the dual-injection design is less prone to carbon build-up than earlier TFSIs.
