The story of this engine

The AGR is one of the 1.9 TDI engines that built Volkswagen's diesel reputation. Fitted to the Golf 4 from 1998, it delivers 66 kW and 210 Nm at just 1 900 rpm, which gives the car a relaxed, torquey feel and the kind of fuel consumption that kept many owners loyal for years.

It belongs to the generation before the Pumpe-Duse unit-injector TDIs such as the ATD and AXR, and many mechanics regard this earlier type as the simpler of the two to live with. There is no common-rail high-pressure system and no particulate filter to worry about.

In South Africa the Golf 4 TDI earned a following with high-mileage drivers, reps and people who tow light loads, and plenty of these cars are still running.

On any used AGR, check the timing belt and tensioner history, since a belt failure damages the valves. Inspect the turbo for shaft play and oil in the intake, check for injector knock and smoke, and look at the EGR valve and intake manifold for heavy soot build-up. Blow-by through the breather is worth checking on a high-mileage unit.

Is the AGR the same as the ALH or AXR?

All are 1.9 TDI engines, but the AXR uses Pumpe-Duse unit injectors and the ALH has different engine management. Send your VIN and we will confirm whether the AGR is a correct match for your car.

Does it come with the turbo and pump?

That depends on the unit in stock. Ask us on WhatsApp for photos so you can see exactly what is fitted before you pay.

What warranty do I get?

3 months on internal engine components and 7 days on the turbo, provided an RMI-registered workshop fits it with new oil, filters and coolant.

What should be replaced when fitting a used AGR?

Fit a new timing belt, tensioner and water pump, new oil and filters, and check the intercooler pipes for oil. Clean the intake and EGR if they are sooted up.
