The story of this engine

The CES series belongs to Volkswagen Group's EA888 2.0 TFSI, the chain-driven turbo four-cylinder that replaced the older belt-driven EA113. The CESA version is listed at 154 kW and 350 Nm and was used in the second-generation Audi TT 8J, mounted transversely. Its strong low-down torque is the big step up over the earlier 147 kW engines.

The TT 2.0 TFSI has a following in South Africa as a usable sports coupe and roadster, and owners generally want a matching engine to keep the car original. Because EA888 codes vary by market and year, matching the exact code to your car matters more than usual here.

The EA888 has well-known wear points. The timing chain and tensioner can stretch and should be inspected or replaced at fitment. The crankcase breather and oil separator can cause oil consumption, carbon builds up on the intake valves, and coil packs and the water pump housing are common replacement items. Use good fuel, because detonation damages pistons. Check the turbo for shaft play before installing.

Should the timing chain be replaced?

On an EA888 with unknown history, inspecting or replacing the chain and tensioner during fitment is strongly recommended.

What warranty do I get?

Three months on internal engine components and seven days on the turbo, provided the engine is fitted by an RMI-registered workshop with new oil, filters and coolant.
