Volkswagen Passat B5 AVF 1.9 TDI Diesel Engine for Sale — South Africa

The AVF is the 96 kW, 130 PS version of Volkswagen's 1.9 TDI with Pumpe Duse unit injectors, part of the EA188 family. It was the higher-output 1.9 for the larger, longitudinal cars: the Passat B5, the Audi A4 B6, the Audi A6 C5 and later the first Skoda Superb.

With 310 Nm from low revs, it gave those heavier sedans and wagons easy overtaking while keeping diesel consumption modest, which is why these cars still turn up on South African roads with big mileages. It is a common choice for owners who want to keep a well-sorted Passat or A4 running rather than replace the car.

Before fitting, renew the timing belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump, and confirm the camshaft and rocker rollers show no wear, since PD engines need the correct low-ash, PD-rated oil to protect the cam lobes that drive the injectors. Check the injector looms, the variable-geometry turbo for sticking vanes, and the EGR valve and intake for soot. A tandem pump leak on the head is worth fixing at the same time.
