The story of this engine

Many South Africans spell it Privia, but the Toyota people-carrier is the Previa, sold as the Estima in Japan. Two different 2.4-litre petrol engines have powered it. The first-generation Previa, built from 1990 to 2000, used the 2TZ-FE, a 2.4-litre twin-cam four laid almost flat under the floor so the cabin could stay flat and roomy. From 2000 the Previa moved to a conventional front-engine layout with the 2AZ-FE, the same 2.4 family used in the Camry and RAV4.

That difference matters, because the two engines are not interchangeable. The listing does not confirm which one this unit is, so we check the engine number against your VIN before anything is sold. On a 2TZ-FE, look for oil leaks, cooling problems and wear in the ancillary drive, which runs off the engine through a separate shaft. On a 2AZ-FE, check for oil consumption, which affects some units, and inspect the head bolt threads in the block for signs of coolant seepage.

Which 2.4 engine does my Previa need?

First-generation Previas from 1990 to 2000 use the 2TZ-FE, and later models from 2000 use the 2AZ-FE. Send your VIN and a photo of your engine number and we will confirm which one this unit is and whether it matches.

What comes with the engine?

You get the engine as shown in the photos, with the code checked before it leaves. Gearbox, clutch, ECU, harness and fluids are not included unless we confirm otherwise on WhatsApp.

What warranty applies?

Used engines carry 3 months on internal engine components. The cover applies when the engine is fitted by an RMI-registered workshop with new oil, filters and coolant.

Do you deliver outside South Africa?

Yes. We arrange delivery across South Africa and to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini and Malawi. Send your town and we will quote freight with the engine.

Can I fit a 2AZ-FE into an older Previa?

No. The first-generation Previa mounts its engine nearly flat under the floor, while the 2AZ-FE is a conventional upright engine. They need completely different mounts, drivelines and ancillaries.
