Mini One D / Cooper D 1.6 Diesel Engine for Sale — South Africa

The second-generation R56 Mini was offered with a 1.6-litre turbodiesel as the One D and Cooper D. For the first years of production that engine came from the PSA Peugeot Citroën DV6 family, the same basic unit Ford calls the DLD-416. From 2011 BMW switched the Mini diesels to its own N47 engine. Both are four-cylinder common-rail turbodiesels, but they are completely different designs and are not interchangeable.

The Mini diesels are less common in South Africa than the petrol cars, which makes a good used engine the practical repair when one fails, especially on a car that is otherwise in good order.

On a DV6-based unit, check the injector seals and the condition of the turbo oil feed, since oil starvation is the usual cause of turbo failure on this family, and keep an eye on carbon build-up from leaking injector washers. On the later N47-type engine, the timing chain at the rear of the engine is the main item to inspect. In both cases, ask about the DPF and EGR condition.
