The story of this engine

The 4JH1 was the largest of Isuzu's pushrod 4J diesels, a 3.0 litre four with a turbocharger and intercooler. In 4JH1-T form it makes about 88 kW and 245 Nm, and some versions use an electronically controlled injection pump instead of a purely mechanical one. It bridged the gap between the old 2.8 turbo and the later common-rail 4JJ1.

Isuzu fitted it to its Faster and Rodeo family pickups and to the first D-Max range from about 2002, and in South Africa it is the engine behind many early 3.0 litre KB bakkies. Owners value the extra torque for towing and loads, and the fact that it is still simpler than a common-rail engine. Its relatively large capacity also means it does not have to work hard on the open road.

On a used 4JH1, look for cracks in the head between valve seats, which can follow overheating, and check that the head gasket has not been leaking into the coolant. Test the turbo for play, check the intercooler pipes for oil, and confirm whether your vehicle uses the electronic pump, since the pump and wiring must match.
