The story of this engine

The G8DB and G8DA are codes from the earlier generation of Ford's 1.6 TDCi, the DLD-416 diesel shared with PSA. With 1,560 cc and common rail injection it was the economical diesel choice in compact Fords of the mid-2000s, the kind of car bought by commuters and sales reps who covered big distances.

Ford built this engine in 90 and 110 horsepower forms. The output and ancillaries on your car depend on the model and year, so we compare your VIN and existing code before sending a replacement.

This family has a few well-documented weaknesses. The turbo oil feed pipe has a small filter that can clog, starving the turbo and the camshaft area of oil. Injector washers leak and let combustion gas carbon up the head, and the cam chain and belt layout needs regular attention. A used engine is best fitted with a new oil feed pipe, fresh oil and filters, and the injector seals checked.

Mechanics value the 1.6 TDCi for its fuel economy and the fact that it fits neatly in small engine bays. Looked after properly, it remains a cheap engine to run.
