Ford introduced the 1.5 TDCi in 2012 by taking the proven 1.6 TDCi and narrowing the bore to 73.5 mm while keeping the 88.3 mm stroke. That gave a 1,499 cc diesel with the same basic architecture and the same appetite for low-rev work. TZJB is one of the Ford codes used for this engine.

The 1.5 TDCi powered later Fiestas from 2013 and the EcoSport, which South Africans bought in good numbers as a compact SUV for gravel roads, holiday trips and daily commuting. A lot of those cars have now covered serious distance, which is why used 1.5 TDCi engines are in demand.

On a used unit, check the injectors and their sealing washers, turbo shaft play and oil in the intercooler pipework, and timing belt history. Ask whether the car spent its life on short trips, which can clog the diesel particulate filter and EGR system. When fitting, replace the fuel filter, and check that the intake and exhaust are clean so the replacement engine is not choked from day one.
