The story of this transmission

Volvo built its late-1990s and 2000s front-drive cars around a transverse five-cylinder petrol engine, and the 2.4-litre version became the everyday choice in the first-generation S60. The B5244S2 made 103 kW and the B5244S made 125 kW, both naturally aspirated, and both happy to cruise at highway speed for years. Behind them, many cars carried an Aisin-built automatic, the 5-speed AW55-50/51SN being the unit listed for the S60 of that era.

This is a used automatic sold for those 2.4 petrol Volvos. Because Volvo used more than one automatic across the S60, V70, S80 and XC70 range and across model years, we read the tag on the casing and match it to your VIN before we quote. That step matters more on a Volvo than on most cars.

The things to know on these boxes are fluid condition and valve-body health. Harsh shifts or flare between gears often trace back to old fluid and worn solenoids rather than hard parts. Workshops like a straight swap of a matching used box because it removes guesswork, and with a fluid service and an adaptation reset the car usually settles quickly.

FAQs

How do I know this gearbox fits my Volvo?

Send your VIN and a photo of the tag on your current gearbox on WhatsApp. Volvo used different automatics across the S60, V70, S80 and XC70, so we match the code before we confirm.

What warranty do I get?

Used automatic gearboxes carry a 2 month warranty, valid when the unit is fitted by an RMI-registered workshop with new fluid and the invoice is kept.

Do you deliver outside South Africa?

Yes. We courier across South Africa and to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini and Malawi. Tell us your town and we quote freight with the unit.

Is a fluid service needed after fitting?

Yes. Fill with the fluid Volvo specifies for the exact gearbox code, check the level hot as the workshop manual describes, and have the shift adaptations reset with a diagnostic tool.
