The story of this engine

The 1.8T was the core petrol engine of the A4 B6, mounted lengthways and fitted with a small turbo, an intercooler and five valves per cylinder. The A4 used several codes over its life, and they differ in output: the BEX is documented at 140 kW in the A4 from late 2002 to 2004, the BFB at 120 kW, and the AMB at 125 kW in some markets. All share the 1781 cc block with an 81 x 86.4 mm bore and stroke.

In South Africa the A4 1.8T was a very common car and many are still in daily use. The main thing to check on a used engine is oil sludge in the sump and pickup screen, which this family is known for when services were stretched. Look at the turbo, coil packs, the vacuum and breather hoses, and the timing belt tensioner, and expect to replace the water pump with the belt.

Workshops like the 1.8T because it is mechanically simple and spares are everywhere. A new timing belt kit, water pump, oil pickup and fresh oil make a used one a sound repair. What is included?

The engine as shown in the photos with the code verified before dispatch. Gearbox, ECU, harness, fluids and timing kit are not included.

What warranty applies?

3 months on internal engine components and 7 days on the turbo, when fitted by an RMI-registered workshop with new oil, filters and coolant.

Do you deliver outside South Africa?

Will a Golf or A3 1.8T fit my A4?

Not directly. Those cars mount the engine across the car, with a different sump, mounts and ancillaries. An A4 needs a longitudinal 1.8T.
